Learn Easy Tricks to Take Your Pulse
Does your heart speed up?
Do you notice palpitations? Do not know if your pulse is normal or is
triggered? Do you want to train without going through certain beats? Well,
there is a very easy way to take your pulse anywhere without resorting to
complex instruments.
Where
to Take the Pulse
Although it is possible
to take it anywhere through an artery and can be pressed on a bone or muscle,
the two most common places are the neck and wrist. But we recommend that you take
it in the neck, because the artery is bigger and, therefore, easier to notice.
How to
Take the Pulse Step By Step
·
To know what your normal heart rate is at rest, before measuring
it via Sphygmomanometer, you must be calm, relaxed and without having previously
done physical exercise, so that the measurement is reliable. A trick to get it
is to stretch a minute before carrying out the measurement. And do not forget
to have a clock or a chronometer on hand to be able to count the time.
·
First, place the index finger and the heart – never the thumb
because it has its own pulse – on the neck, just under the chin. Then, press it
lightly, without compressing it, until you feel the beats. If you did it too
hard, you could stimulate a reflex mechanism that causes your heart to slow
down and alter the real result.
·
To measure it, count the beats for 30 seconds and multiply the
total number of beats by 2 (or count the beats for 15 seconds and multiply by
4). The resulting figure is your pulse rate per minute, which is what we call
pulse.
It’s
Normal When…
Although it depends on
many factors, it is generally considered that the pulse is normal when at rest
it is between 60 and 100 beats per minute in the case of adults. And between 70
and 100, in the case of those under 18 years of age. Even so, there may be
situations, such as stress or distress that accelerate the heart rate
momentarily.
Go To
The Doctor…
If your resting pulse
reaches or exceeds 120 beats per minute or is lower than 45 beats, check with a
Manual Blood Pressure Monitor and
visit your doctor. If you notice that your pulsations are also irregular
(different intervals between pulsation and pulsation), seek medical assistance
as soon as possible.
Do You
Want To Measure Your Pulse During Exercise?
It is not necessary that
you lie down for a minute or that you relax. On the contrary, if what you want
is to know your heart rate during the exercise, you should take the pulse
during the practice of it. In this case what interests you is knowing the
maximum frequency that you can reach during the exercise and this depends on
your age, sex, and physical condition.
The most advisable before
starting any activity, especially cardiovascular and if you have never done
sport, is that you submit to a stress test and be a health professional who determines your optimal level of
personalized pulsations. This will not only ensure that your heart does not
suffer from the effort but also you can multiply the beneficial effects of the
exercise you perform.
